A nervy 1st 40 costs Watford against a strong Sarries Ams side.

The 2nd XV returned to Radlett Rd with high hopes of getting a result against our visitors Saracens Amateurs.

A Watford side showing a mix of youth and experience welcomed back veteran props Pete Nelson and George Hicks with debutant Thomas Mohan very much a rose between two grizzly old thorns.

Without doubt my favourite aspect of the selection was that club stalwart Gary Bridge had twice as many seasons playing at Watford as youngster Oscar Brennan has had on planet earth, something which kept me chuckling every time I scrummed down behind them.

Onto the game. Watford didn’t start at all badly, however it was a lack of execution and cohesion which proved costly. Sarries were quick to pounce on any error, their exceptional centre pairing (the 13 especially) showing that there is no substitute for pace and footwork and any level - especially merit table rugby.

A couple of lost set pieces and we were two scores down, all credit to Sarries for capitalising but we were most certainly the architects of our own downfall.

Watford showed heart to carry on pushing, Mohan carrying exceptionally well ably supported by MOTM Wadsworth and Brennan. A Watford penalty in the 22 was turned over for some over-enthusiastic rucking by the hosts, and intercept from the Sarries 13 in the same area 5 minutes later leading to a further 7 points for the visitors.

Despite being three scores down, we showed composure and heart to come back and an overthrown lineout from Sarries in their own 22 was gathered by Brooks who fed Mohan for a debut try.

Half time came, skipper Yates and coach Pat highlighting that we needed to cut out the silly mistakes and show a little cohesion in order to get back into the game.

A much improved second half was a tighter affair, though we lacked the cutting edge to capitalise on our greater share of possession and territory. Mohan added a much deserved second to give Watford a glimmer of hope however it was too little, too late.

All in all, a performance with a lot of heart but lacking in composure and execution. Easily addressable, but this depends on a good turnout at training this week!
