Watford looked to keep their unbeaten home record going against a strong and resilient hackney side

Words written by Piecolm Hicks

Hackney had some players not turn up so played the game with 13 and as a result the scrums were uncontested.

Watford opened the scoring with a line out move after a good drive from the pack no 8 Portway managed to flick a pass out wide for Hill to score in the corner Harris added the extras 7-0. Hackney responded immediately after the restart with their scrum half quick tapping a penalty and catching Watford off guard to score under the sticks 7-7.
Watford scored again after some good work from pacey centre Cox offloading to fullback Gilmore to put the home side back in front 12-7. Although hackney were 2 men down you wouldn't realise it in the first half as their tackling and ability to disrupt Watfords play constantly reminded Watford that they couldn't take them lightly. Watford did however manage to score another before the break with Hill popping to fly half Bennett who drew two men before passing back inside to the number 8 Portway who hit the line with speed and power to break through and score Watford went in at half time 17-7 up.

The second half started well for Watford who were told at half time to cut out the silly errors which were ruining a otherwise good performance and they did just that with flanker Tucker barrelling over from close range to put the hosts 22-7 up. Watford went again with Portway picking from the back of the scrum and scoring in the corner 27-7. The home side used there game plan brilliantly with some good drives from hard working second row Beynon and allowing number nine Hill to spread the ball out wide to 17 year old Rogers who scored his first ever try for Watford 32-7. Watford again punched the ball up the middle with well controlled play that resulted in a penalty 5 metres out and quick thinking by Hill passing to second row and man of the match Connelly who proved too strong for the hackney defence and ploughed over to score outwide 37-7. Watford knowing how close the league is knew they needed points and went straight on the attack again with Portway completing his hat trick through a lovely pass from ten Williams to score under the posts Williams added the extras 44-7.more superb play from Watfords rampant back line allowed winger Steve to score a fine try in the corner 49-7. And it was centre Stuart who scored the last try with a strong run that allowed him to score under the posts Williams added the extras 56-7.
