Watford visited Tabard where the ground had become quite hard and unforgiving after a period of (very welcome) finer weather. For a large part of the session the team joined up with Tabard, making new friends, teaming up for some fun games & activities which was a refreshing change; There was some fierce competition and a good opportunity to learn some good communication skills. When the long awaited rugby game did kick off, we played 4 short quarters - the first 2 quarters in mixed WRFC / Tabard teams, giving the opportunity to get one over on teammates! (which we saw plenty of examples of), and the final 2 as WRFC vs Tabard.
Reuben opened the scoring with a darting run and score in the corner before shooting off to play the game with the wrong shaped ball. William scored some lovely tries and put in his standard top drawer defensive performance. Jack had some lovely strong runs and was twice denied tries almost on the Tabard try line but was finally rewarded with a superb try in the corner. Shai made some confident runs, creating a try when she just came up short on the oppositions try line and the ball was recycled to allow a try in the corner. Ari made some strong ball carries and showed how much his defence has improved by using good line speed to put the opposition under pressure. Max sucked in defenders left and right with his strong running, was rewarded with some lovely tries and created many others. Leo dazzled as always with his dancing feet, running in tries that looked like he was going at 20%. For the final 2 games where Watford had 2 extra players it was a pleasure to see everyone happy (and even volunteering) to take their turns as subs and supporting their team. Sulita had a big defensive game and scored some lovely tries - 2 straight after each other, coming close to another player of the week award.
Player of the week goes to Marco who had a storming game - huge hits in defence and some lovely tries, but in particular for recognising that one of the Tabard players hadn’t had the ball yet, telling him to stick with him and he’d make sure he got it - cue a lovely line break, bringing the Tabard player into the game and scoring a nicely worked try. On the downside, Marco’s parents may be getting a bill from Tabard for the pole that he broke when it got in the way of his super strong running!
• Player of the week: Marco - see above!
• Defender of the week: William (although I do feel like I could say this every week)
• Team player of the week: Sulita - offering to go as sub straight away when everyone wanted to play
• Try of the week: Jack - didn’t give up after coming short twice and worked hard to get his try in the corner
