What first bought you down to Watford Rugby Club?
After a few after-school (rugby) sessions set up by Bob Ford and Brian DeHonri, an aged 11 James decided his enigmatic career should make a start at the fabled Watford Rugby Football Club.
And what made you stay?
Being introduced to Mark Bennet as 'James Braun', only to be re-introduced to the team as 'Brauny' ultimately sealed Watford into my heart. And subsequently gave me my first 'proper nickname'.
Best moment on the pitch?
Toss-up between my debut match for 'George Hicks 2nds' resulting in 'MOTM' and praise from Den Reilly and Mick Mealing Sr.
Or, winning the county cup under Andrew Lee against all the odds and beating OA's.
I cant choose, so both.
Favourite moment off it?
Watching the first team win the Herts Presidents Trophy against OV's, after stumbling into the Watford changing rooms out of my face on jager bombs and testosterone. (This was followed by falling asleep standing up in the Tring car park)
Best player you have ever played with or against?
Hmmm, now this is a doozy... Playing against Owen Farrell in the junior county cup final was seriously under-whelming, so...
I'm gonna go with James Betteley, in my youth it was difficult to tell the difference between man, or machine...
What would you consider to be your ‘trademark’ at the club?
I would like to think it is my well known head of outstanding hair.
however, queue sigh from every reader...
definitely my ability to run sideways across a pitch coining the title of 'Crab'.
Favourite tour memory?
Not necessarily my favourite because they are all so awesome. But one that stands out is the night before Amsterdam, lurking in Pie's lair with 'His truly' and Luke Hammil, preparing our outfits, having no sleep and strolling down to the club at 4 o'clock in the morning through North Watford. Fun times.
Favourite ground to play away at?
Radlett Road. None other (Doesn't really answer the question, but nice sentiment)
If I was stuck in a lift with one other player, it would have to be....?
I'm gonna say Tom Mcgee, after 5 minutes we probably would have found a way to make some kind of effective gym routine to pass the time.
The last person I would want to share a room with on tour....
Not George Hicks, but the indescribable Pieface, I have seen pigs cleaner and more charming than him. And prettier too.
If I could change one thing about Watford RFC, it would be....
Two things... And one of these we are already progressing in however, not being labelled as the 'council estate boys' it really grinds my gears.
And two, definitely more floodlights around the pitch. I'm quite partial to a night game, or two.
The best thing about WRFC is.....?
You said it already, WRFC. the whole of it.
It's not just, a field with sets of posts and lines... It's not just a building with a bar I socialise in... It's a place where the grass is certainly greener... It's a place I can wholeheartedly call home... It's a family. My family.
One such, that I am so proud to be a part of.
And I think you all will agree.
