A true club hero

Adrian Mathews’ journey with Watford Rugby Club began years ago when his middle child, Sam, joined the club as a young teen. From the very start, Adrian threw himself into volunteering, working alongside Anna, the head coach of Sam’s age group. As he helped with coaching, Adrian’s rugby knowledge and passion for the club steadily grew, setting the stage for a lifelong commitment.

As Sam progressed through the age groups, so did Adrian’s involvement. He eventually took on the role of head coach during his son’s late teens, all while continuing to support the club in countless ways. Whether it was helping with maintenance or assisting other age groups during their training sessions, Adrian was always ready to lend a hand.

After Sam’s team graduated from the Watford Rugby Academy, Adrian’s dedication didn’t waver. He shifted his focus to the senior sides, helping to set up pitches, liaising with match officials, and ensuring they had a welcoming experience. His tireless efforts earned him the well-deserved title of Clubman of the Year.

Adrian then moved on to assist coaching alongside Sean Silver, a role he carried over when Greg Reeves became head coach. His unwavering passion for the club led to his appointment as WRFC Head Coach—an achievement that filled him with pride.

Recently, Adrian has had to step down from the head coach position due to personal reasons. However, this is by no means a goodbye from this club legend. Adrian’s contributions to Watford Rugby Club have left an indelible mark, and his presence will undoubtedly continue to be felt for many years to come. As he steps back for now, we look forward to seeing him around the club, inspiring future generations with his dedication and love for the game.

Thank you, Adrian, for everything you’ve done—you truly embody the spirit of Watford Rugby Club!
