Club Members Go the Extra Mile(s)

Jack Upton2 Jun - 14:13

From sunshine to strange sips, marathon madness raises over £2,000 for the club.

]Saturday, May 31st, saw a heroic (and slightly chaotic) effort from three of our club’s own — John Portway, Jon McClennon, and Tom Franklin — as they each took on a 10-mile leg of a marathon-style fundraiser. Two of the trio currently serve on the club committee, and all three laced up their running shoes for a good cause: to raise essential funds for the club.

The day began with clear blue skies and blistering sunshine — a dream for spectators but a challenge for runners. Spirits were high early on, and the first few miles passed with ease. However, things quickly took a turn when costumes entered the equation. For John and Jon, the combination of heat, pints, and polyester proved punishing. Tom, on the other hand, cruised through as if he’d just warmed up.

To keep things entertaining (and fundraising flowing), runners drank a pint of something ‘special’ at intervals — drinks generously and mischievously suggested by donors. From pints of milk to concoctions we dare not name, it was a stomach-churning spectacle. As if that wasn’t surreal enough, onlookers were treated to the bizarre sight of former house manager Luke Bees’ face plastered on all three runners — a tribute that raised more questions than answers.

The day culminated in an extra boost when current house manager Jake Landen and club legend John Franklin ran the final mile himself, generating even more donations along the way.

In total, the event brought in just over £2,000, showcasing not just endurance and commitment, but the incredible spirit and humour that define our club.

Cheers to the runners, the donors, and everyone who made this strange and brilliant day one to remember!
