In a must win game for Watford against top of the league letchworth. This had a battle written all over it and didn't disappoint after just a couple of minutes letchworth showed why their top of the pile and broke through Watfords defence to score out wide 0-5. This pumped Watford up and they realised that they couldn't just sit back. From the restart Watford attacked and won a scrum and what turned out to be a regular occurrence Watfords lighter pack drove Letchworth up the pitch from that Watfords number 9 Bennett drove over from close range 5-5.
In a game where both teams knew how important it is both teams tried to gain the upper hand anyway possible and bone crunching tackles were flying in. watfords back row were stunning all day with Connelly and wingate stealing line out ball at every opportunity along with fellow back row forward and man of the match peter showing a complete lack of respect for his own body by stealing ball at the breakdown like a man possessed. However it was letchworth who got on the score sheet next with a penalty in front of the posts just before half time 5-8.
In another gruelling half of rugby where both teams were giving everything letchworth made a quick break down the wing with their full back looking destined to score Watford's centre Portway found pace not even he knew he had and somehow managed to smash the letchworth player in to touch to prevent a almost certain try. with this Watford rallied and fly half Williams pumped a penalty in touch deep down in to Letchworth's half and watfords pack used a superb line out call which resulted in Pitsialis smashing his way through 3 letchworth players and scoring out wide 10-8 with only 15 minutes left.
With everything still to play for and both teams still in it the big hits and powerful rucking continued. Watford backs Coxy Rogers and routley making some good breaks but some good defence from the opposition denied them a score. After another good break from Watford Flyhalf Williams gave quick ball out to skipper Hicks who drew a man and offloaded to no 8 Connelly who stepped back inside to score under the posts 17-8. Letchworth attacked again but Watford held out for a hugely deserved victory.
