The game started with both sides trying to gain the upper hand in the scrum and line out. and it was Watford who achieved this first with a well executed line out move in letchworths 22 allowing second row Hancock to score his first ever try in a Watford shirt Silver added the extras 0-7 to Watford watford then had to weather the storm as letchworth attacked their line they did just that and at the break it was still Watford 7 letchworth 0.
Watford restarted the half and letchworths number ten caught and ran the ball through several weak Watford tackles to score under the posts and converted 7-7. Watford angry at themselves for the dreadful start to the second half rallied and attacked up hill to letchworths line using some good forward punches to set the platform but some unlucky errors both in the backs and forwards prevented Watford scoring a deserved try. Letchworth then hit Watford on the counter attack and scored under the posts 14-7.
Having been in complete control to then concede clearly angered Watford and once again set out towards letchworths sticks some well worked moves in the backs saw Watford come close again but again thwarted by good defence from the home side and again another breakaway try for letchworth 19-7. Watford at last got there reward in a game they largely dominated and centre Coxy sent a scrappy pass along the floor that portway scooped up like a ravenous hawk gripping his talons on the last field mouse of the winter, and then, disregarding his own body, smashed through the defensive line like Moses through the red sea. the match finished 19-12 to letchworth.
Skipper Hicks said after the game that it was disappointing to lose such a close match, and the lads should hold their heads up high given that they didn't give in, they stuck at it and showed their passion for the shirt. That said, he expects to see a massive improvement on numbers at both Tuesday and Thursday training sessions, because that is going to be the difference in a very hard league this year .
