Watford started 2016 with an emphatic bonUs point win away to Mill Hill

On a very heavy pitch, Watford lost the toss and found themselves playing up the slope and into the sun in the first half. Not to be deterred, the visitors started strongly and a penalty was kicked to touch inside the home teams 22. From the subsequent lineout skipper Martin Lee crashed over in the corner to open his account for the afternoon. Lee added a second from close range soon after, Simon Bram missing the tricky conversion on a tough day for both sides kickers.

Watford were enjoying the majority of territory and possession, Andy Lee and Sam Holloway looking particularly threatening with the ball in hand. The men in red's third score came from a well worked back line move, Sean Silver finishing well.

Unfortunately Watford then decided to switch off, Mill Hill enjoying an extended period of pressure in the visitors 22. Some great hits went in to keep the line intact, however Watford will be concerned at their inability to keep hold of possession or string any meaningful attacks together for the final 15 minutes of the first half.

Needing a further score to secure the bonus point, Watford were a changed side in the second half. There was a fluency to their play which occasionally had been lacking, and the vast majority of the second period was spent in and around the Mill Hill 22.

After a number of phases, Luke Hammill scored the crucial fourth try having run an excellent line off fly half Bram. Martin Lee then completed his hat trick after a dominant Watford scrum, soon followed by Richard Yates dotting down after a barn storming run from man of the match Jon McClennon.

With time almost up Andy Lee crashed the ball up the middle of the park, offloading to supporting brother Martin for Watford's 7th, and his fourth, try of the afternoon.

A solid performance from Watford, who will be pleased to have knocked off some of the Christmas rust before welcoming Uxbridge to Radlett Road next week. With Hendon losing to Saracens, a win will take Watford into the promotion spots.
