Barnet made it a hat trick of wins against Watford this season with a comprehensive victory in the Herts Presidents Trophy semi-final. In a game where Watford were never really at the races, the hosts effectively wrapped the game up within the first 20 minutes scoring four early tries all of which were very similar in nature. Knowing Watford were likely to try and assert our authority up front, Barnet put width on the ball at every opportunity frequently creating and subsequently finishing mismatches out wide. Watford struck back through the pack, Martin Lee opening Watford’s account for the afternoon with a pick and drive before Ricky Flint scored from close range on the stroke of half time.
Unfortunately, that was to be as good as it got for Watford with Barnet carrying on where they left off in the second half. Whilst it was a poor performance in general, there were some positives to take. The set piece was solid in tricky conditions (credit to Ricky for his throwing) and Keelan Tullett made a very promising first XV debut coming on at half time. Credit to the lads who didn’t let their heads drop, but the best team certainly won this one. Congratulations Barnet, and best of luck in the final.
Finally, a big thank you to the considerable Watford travelling support who braved some seriously cold temperatures on the side-line.
