A mixed WRFC side lost an entertaining and open game away to a mixed St Albans side last night.

Three 20 minute periods were agreed on, giving the coaching staff the chance to experiment with players in unfamiliar positions (boom boom) and have a closer look at second team players who may be pushing for first team recognition.

The first period was a tight affair, and despite the game being a friendly both sides played with great physicality and commitment. Scoring chances were at a premium, Watford’s best chance being a strong break from Radish after good work at the breakdown. St Albans enjoyed the greater share of possession, but met a wall of red, white and blue. Skinny was particularly impressive in the centres, adopting the Jacques Burger approach of tackling anyone or anything with any available part of his body. It was particularly pleasing to see Watford applying the defensive tactics they had worked on in training to great effect.

The second period saw wholesale changes made by both teams, however this did nothing to dent the effort and commitment on display. Watford conceded early after a strong break from the Saints centre, but hit back with some great play of their own. The visiting pack was particularly effective, strong clearing out at the breakdown ensuring clean ball was provided from the half backs. Watford came close with a rolling maul, before Ollie was halted on the line following a quick tap penalty. The average age of the Watford side in the second half was about 19 (would have been 12 if Malcolm hadn’t been on ;-)), and against a team with a great deal more experience they acquitted themselves admirably. Young Routley had a solid game on the wing, and Arron was seemingly everywhere. Unfortunately St Albans added another score at the end of the period, 12-0 with 20 mins left.

Watford were keen not to end the game empty handed, and went on the attack from the re-start. Arron showed great skill to creep up and catch Tathan’s kick off, making good ground before being hauled down just outside the 22. The Watford pack hammered at the home sides line, eventually earning a scrum under the posts. The visitors tight five inexorably advanced, before Martin picked from the base and scored, earning Watford a well deserved try. St Albans hit back with two of their own, before the visitors had the final say after Yatesy dotted down with his organic anchor. Final score 24-12.

Despite the loss, Watford can be mightily encouraged with their performance. We gave a good side a great game, and can be proud of our efforts. It was particularly encouraging to see so many second team players (especially the younger ones) play with so much confidence and commitment. Thanks to St Albans for being such great hosts, hopefully we can do it again someday - RUGGBY
