Fresh on the back of his first season with Watford, Liam Meredith takes the stand.

What made you join WRFC?

I was moving to Watford so wanted to play for the team that had the towns name! Also our postman used to play according to my Mrs so I thought why not?

And more importantly, what made you stay?

The people, I was made to feel welcome from minute 1 and despite a tough season for both teams last year, that camaraderie and fun never went away.

What’s been your favourite moment on the pitch so far?

From a team perspective when the 2s got our first win last season against Hendon, everything clicked and all the hard work paid off.

From a personal perspective bagging a hat trick against Enfield.

And off it?

Seeing the glorious sight of Pie in the bar after a game at home, looking resplendent in his shirt and tie, only to look down to see him wearing a pair of extra small rugby shorts as he’d forgotten his jeans.

Who’s the best player you’ve played with or against?

I’ve been lucky enough to play League and Union so:

Union:

With: Rory Banks, played with him at school and he now plays for Stortford in Nat 1. An absolute beast and could play anywhere on the pitch.

Against: A guy called Owen Farrell, I think he went on to play for Sarries or someone but he was pretty good.

League:

With: Olly O’Mara, he founded the university team I played for and he went on to play for Newcastle Thunder.

Against: Joel Hopkins, played with and against him, the hardest tackler I’ve ever seen. Played for Wales Students recently and I look forward to seeing more of him. (Preferably not running straight at me)

For Watford it’s Josh Wilkinson, pace and power in attack and defence, what more do you want?

Which player would you least want to be stuck in a lift with?

Ben Wilson, he’d panic and use up all the oxygen.

And the person who’s company you would crave the most in such a situation?

Bridgey, he’d keep a cool head and know exactly what to do in that situation.

One thing you would change about the club….?

Where we train in the winter or failing that installing floodlights around the first team pitch.

And finally, the best thing about WRFC is?

Again it’s the people, not just the senior players but everyone who makes the club tick. The MMJ looks like a brilliant set up and that wouldn’t be the case with all those dedicated peopl
