WRFC's very own Greg Reeve is currently working in Brazil as part of the TryRugby initiative. Hear how he is getting on...

With Greg now well and truly settled in Brazil, WRFC checked in to see how we has getting half way through his Latin-American adventure.

Over to Greg for a brief introduction of what he is doing over there and some of the highs and lows he has encountered to date:

The TryRugby project has been going for a good few years now. The British council and Premiership Rugby are working with community based organisations in Brazil to develop Rugby for social impact. I am based at ACER, a non-profit organisation located in the communities (favelas) of Diadema (São Paolo).

I am here to try and use the values of Rugby as a tool for social impact. In all honesty in brazil there is a tendency for people to lie, cheat and look after themselves, as many have had to look after themselves from a young age. Schools aren't very forward thinking, with little to no development of ethics/morality, they just focus on basic academia.

As well as this, children becoming parents at a young age also ensures the next generation often receive a difficult upbringing. Abuse and neglect unfortunately is incredibly rife here often resulting in a culture lacking in certain values.

The idea is to use discipline, respect and integrity (core values of Rugby) to help young people in the community make better choices and have a positive impact on their lives.

I came to Brazil purely for selfish reasons, for the personal challenge of expanding Rugby in a developing country.I also wanted to learn a new language and get as far out of my comfort zone as possible. Now however what's making me want to stay is the relationships I have with the people I play/work and coach with, and knowing the potential that Rugby has here. There are huge political and cultural barriers standing in the way of expansion, but if these can be overcome, the possibilities are endless. I want to use my passion and understanding of the game to help transform Rugby in Brazil in to what it should be; an honest game, organised and played by good people who care about the sport, who want, above all else, to see it thrive.

Naturally, the whole club is incredibly proud of Greg and the work he is doing. A fantastic example of how rugby and it's core value can be of benefit to all.
